About Charles

"Above all, I craved to seize the whole essence, in the confines of one single photograph, of some situation that was in the process of unrolling itself before my eyes."

-Henri Cartier-Bresson, Photographer

I've been called a "traditionalist" by some.  Perhaps it's true that as a pure photographic artist, I find comfort in those things that are lasting.  Traditions are, by definition, things that last.  Styles may change but over the last 200 years, the one constant has been the photographic print--whether it be a glass plate, a tintype, a daguerrotype, or a paper photograph.  Here at The Highlander Studios, I strive to explain the importance of the fine photographic print to my clients.  Years from now, when Facebook has faded into the ether of our memories, the DVD has been scratched, or the USB drive has failed to read; your prints will continue to stand the test of time. Your captured memories will remain for you and for generations of your family to enjoy.

Not only do I provide the technical knowledge to capture your family's most precious photographs, having been a professional image-maker for the past 16 years, but I also provide timeless artist-designed albums, hand-crafted photographic prints, and masterfully framed canvases.  My clients know not to settle for merely an image on a screen.  They want art for their home that they will enjoy for a lifetime.

Like Henri Cartier-Bresson above,  I have had a similar drive to create and restore images that evoke a sense of remembrance in the viewer. Whether it be a timeless portrait of a family, an image of a bride on her special day, a high school senior coming of age, or an antique image being restored to its original splendor, I am truly excited to be a part of your family's memories.

From the first roll of film I exposed and processed in my home darkroom at 15 years old, I realized the magical importance of the finely-crafted image.  The "Decisive Moment" which I was able to capture would exist forever, thought it had already long-since passed by.

I began my photographic career photographing nationally and internationally-known musicians on stage. While on tour I mastered the ability to capture breathtaking images in less than optimal lighting conditions. I bring the same level of enthusiasm and energy to my portraiture that I did to the many album covers I have to my credit. Known for senior portraits that rock, bridal portraits that warm the heart, and family portraits that capture the essence of your loved ones, I would love to be your family image-maker.

I am a past Governor of the Capital District, Virginia Professional Photographers Association and a former board member.  I am also a past national councilor of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).
